Additional Details

a rare, unrecorded image of medal of honor winner Christian Abraham Fleetwood (1840-1914). In the fall of 1864 with the 4th United States Colored Troops, Fleetwood saved the flag from falling into Confederate hands, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was one of only 16 men of color to receive this medal. The present photo was no doubt taken while Fleetwood was employed in Washington, D.C. as a clerk at the Freedmen's Bank. The cap and great coat he is wearing might be related to his position with the National Guard.
